AECTUAL ASSESSMENT

AECTUAL - AMS 2022

The assignment was to recreate the Sun pavilion by Aectual. The intention is to create a pattern that regulates the amount of sunlight and rainwater that passes through the canopy. In their version, the features are controlled by positioning the ‘veins’ at different angles to be completely closed (0% aperture) or open (100%). In this interpretation of the pavilion, the pattern or range of openness is depicted by two bezier curves. Based on a top and bottom profile that are both uniquely subdivided, the lofted surface recreates a natural bending of petals, similar to that in nature. This natural bending of the surface allows light to penetrate through different apertures throughout the pavilion. It also enables rainwater to slow and drip along a curved surface, acting as protective as tree leaves.
